Thermal performance under constant temperatures can accurately predict insect development times across naturally variable microclimates

چکیده

External conditions can drive biological rates in ectotherms by directly influencing body temperatures. While estimating the temperature dependence of performance traits such as growth and development rate is feasible under controlled laboratory settings, predictions nature are difficult. One major challenge lies translating constant to fluctuating environments. Using butterfly Pieris napi model system, we show that rate, an important fitness trait, be accurately predicted field using models parameterized Additionally, a factorial design, accurate made across microhabitats but critically hinge on adequate consideration non-linearity reaction norms, spatial heterogeneity microclimate temporal variation temperature. Our empirical results also supported comparison published simulated data. Conclusively, our combined suggest that, discounting direct effects temperature, insect generally unaffected thermal fluctuations.

Can Trace-Driven Simulators Accurately Predict Superscalar Performance?

There are four crucial issues associated with performance simulators: simulator retargetability, simulator validation, simulation speed and simulation accuracy. This paper documents our experiences in developing performance simulators and our recent findings in using these simulators. We are concerned with all four of the crucial issues. Our first-generation tool, VMW, focused on achieving reta...

Insect herbivores can choose microclimates to achieve nutritional homeostasis.

The interaction between temperature and diet quality can affect the life history of ectotherms. The rate and ratio at which protein and carbohydrate are obtained from food are important aspects of diet quality, and insects have a well-developed capacity to adjust their feeding behaviour and post-ingestive physiology to regulate intake and allocation of these nutrients. If the supply of protein ...

Landfill Temperatures Under Variable Decomposition Conditions

This study was conducted to evaluate temperature, gas, and leachate data at two landfills in similar climatic regions (Detroit, Michigan, USA and Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan) to determine the interrelations between heat production and resulting waste temperatures and gas and leachate levels in landfills under variable decomposition conditions. Significant temperature increases occurred under lon...

Insect development under predation risk variable temperature, and variable food quality.

We model the development of an individual insect, a grasshopper, through its nymphal period as a function of a trade-off between prey vigilance and nutrient intake in a changing environment. Both temperature and food quality may be variable. We scale up to the population level using natural mortality and a predation risk that is mass, vigilance, and temperature dependent. Simulations reveal the...
